Video: On the Future of Computers and Creativity

In this video, Jon McCormack and Goldsmiths’ Mark d’Inverno introduce and reflect on current research questions regarding computers and creativity.

“Creativity is an enigmatic yet widely discussed phenomena,” they explain. “With the now widespread adoption of computers and information technologies, the nature of
creativity and how we think about it has changed significantly.

“We argue for a shift in thinking about computers from tools to creative agents and collaborative partners. We present 21 questions we think are crucial to understanding this new relationship and begin to offer answers, or pathways to answers for a selective subset.”

NIME2014 conference: New Interfaces for Musical Expression

NIME2014 (the International Conference on New Interfaces for Musical Expression) runs Monday 30 June – Friday 4 July 2014 at Goldsmiths, with an exciting programme of scholarly presentations and public events.

nime-publicPUBLIC EVENTS

Anyone curious about the interface between music and technology is welcome to attend our public programme of concerts, exhibitions, keynotes, and hack sessions. We bring cutting-edge music interfaces out of research labs and onto the stage. If you’re excited about Microsoft Kinect, Leap Motion, Nintendo Wii, or any range of highly creative apps for smartphones, and wonder how these things are invented, and what kinds of offbeat and experimental ways in which they could be used to make and perform music, then the NIME2014 public programme is for you.

An experiment in live performance + online engagement

Goldsmiths University, Coney Interactive Theatre and ShowCaster are experimenting with new ways to create live experiences online. This June we’re developing Better Than Life, a 45-minute interactive theatre piece designed for a small live audience and an unlimited number of people online.

We’re looking for audience members to join in the experiment. You can register to take part in the show online wherever you are or join a small group in the live space in London by buying tickets.

Performance dates
This is an experiment with a set of new web tools, so please do not expect a fully finished experience. Do, though, expect something surprising and intriguing which showcases the potential of live online interaction.

Open rehearsals – your chance to see the show in embryo

  • Thursday 12 June, 6pm & 8pm
  • Friday 13 June, 1pm

Previews – revised show based on last week’s mistakes

  • Thursday 19 June, 6pm & 8pm

Final presentation – media-rich prototype of a full show

  • Thursday 26 June, 6pm & 8pm
  • Friday 27 June, 1pm

Go to betterthanlife.org.uk to register for the live online show or buy one of the limited tickets to join us in the live space in London.
