Supporting Personal Tutors

Note: whenever you meet with a student, take notes in the “meetings” tab of that student’s record on the intranet. For advice on how to take meeting notes, follow this guide.

Academic Concerns

Student has a one-off issue (medical/family/other) that means they will miss an assessment deadline

Student needs an extension on a piece of work of 7 days or less:

Student will need an extension on a piece of work for longer than 7 days:

Student has issue that will cause them to miss multiple deadlines

Student has a chronic, on-going condition and will need adjustments for learning and assessments

Student feels overwhelmed with work and is thinking of dropping out

Student is falling behind on work

Student wants to change modules or course

Student has had multiple absences

Student has queries about their timetable

Pastoral Concerns

Student feeling suicidal or is at risk of harming themselves

Student is experiencing mental health issues/difficulties but they are not at immediate risk

Student is physically hurt

Student dealing with bereavement (family/friend/fellow student)

Student has experienced physical or sexual abuse/harassment/violence

The fact that the student has chosen you for disclosure means that the student already trusts you and you have created a safe space for them. Your role is to support the student. It is up to management to decide on the outcome and investigation.

Goldsmiths has an anonymous reporting page called Report and Support. You can suggest this as an option if the student wishes to report an incident anonymously.

Note if you aren't sure what terminology to use, often "survivor" is better to use than "victim".
