Similar Works
While I´m sure that very similar works have existed in the past, when it comes to documented installation pieces, I could not find anything that was constructed in exactly the same way as The Thin Line. The following are samples by artists doing similar works. All quotes are from "Art and Electronic Media" (Shaken, Phaidon, 2009) unless otherwise stated:
1. Strange Attractors by KMA, Interactive Kinetic Light Installation, 2009
"Strange Attractors (The Anatomy of Dr. Tulp) is a kinetic light installation exploring the relationships between human bodies, both real and imagined. A prone figure lies in the centre of an empty square, and passers by are invited to participate in the ritualistic exploration of the environment." - KMA website
2. Interface by Peter Campus, Video Camera, Monitor, Glass, 1972
"Interface uses closed loop video to explore questions of self, identity and perception in a way that is intuitive yet jarring... Two images are produced: one a mirror-image, reflected on the glass, and the other, reversed, created by the projector."
3. Aeriology by Joyce Hinterding, Copper Wire, Electronics, Sound System, 1995
"This work consists of a VLF antenna created from 20 kilometers of copper wire that Hinterding coiled in this site-specific installation. The shimmering sculptural form captures and makes audible electromagnetic signals radiating from events in deep-space that may have occurred millions of years ago..."
4. Blinkenlights by Chaos Computer Club, Mobile phones, Computers, Software, Electronics, Lights, 2001
"... the center of Berlin was transformed into an interactive public display system that allowed users to use their cellular phones or computers to send messages, create animations, or even play a game of Pong"
5. Field of Interaction by Piotr Kowalski, Interactive Light Installation, 1983
"In this environmental space, spectators walk through a passageway and, by doing so, alter its pattern of illumination."
6. Snows by Carolee Schneemann with E.A.T., Multimedia Installation and Performance, 1967
"Through an electronic switching system engineered by E.A.T. and installed in the seats, the audience played an active role in determining elements of the performance."
7. Frequency and Volume by Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, Projectors, cameras, computers, radio-electric scanners, antennae, radios and 48 channel sound system, 2003
"Frequency and Volume enables participants to tune into and listen to different radio frequencies by using their own bodies." -website of Rafael Lozano-Hemmer
8. Voz-Alta by Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, 4x10kW Xenon robotic searchlights, modified megaphone, computers, DMX distribution, live FM radio transmission, 2008
"...participants speak freely into a megaphone placed on the "Plaza de las Tres Culturas" [...]. As the megaphone amplifies the voice, a 10kW searchlight automatically "beams" the voice as a sequence of flashes: if the voice is silent the light is off and as it gets louder so does the light's brightness." -website of Rafael Lozano-Hemmer
9. Soundings by Robert Rauschenberg with Bill Klüver, Semi-transparent Plexiglas, silk screened images, Spotlights, Microphones, 1968
"As the background sound grew, the lights grew brighter, reflecting the crowd´s activity."
10. TGarden by Sponge and Foam, Interactive Multimedia Environment, 2001
"A responsive play space where visitors create their media environment through movement, gesture and social interaction..."
