The Department of Computing aims to be the leading centre in the UK for
the study of Computer Science within Creative, Cognitive and Social contexts.
We are leaders and partners on a variety of multi-disciplinary research
projects and key alliances with other academic departments at Goldsmiths
(we have joint projects with the Departments of Visual Arts, Psychology, and Music),
other Universities
(we have joint projects with Cambridge University, MIT, Leeds University, and Kings College)
cultural institutions (we work with several museums including Tate Modern),
and creative and telecommunications industries.
Our research is funded by the EPSRC, Arts Council England, the AHRB,
the European Space Agency and the European Union (through the Sixth Framework Programme).
The Department is an integral part of two new multi-disciplinary College-wide research centres:
the Centre for Cognition, Computation and Culture, and Goldsmiths Digital Studios.
The Digital Studios will be stretched across two sites one of which will be part of the Will Alsop
designed building that will open on the Goldsmiths Campus at the end of 2004 and the other will be
on the BTExact research headquarters at Martlesham, as BT is one of our strategic partners.
Regular
seminars
in Computer Science are held
which help to stimulate research; the seminars are attended by both
staff and postgraduate students. Presentations are given by members
of the Department as well as by guest speakers from other
institutions.
