{"id":2309,"date":"2017-01-20T11:48:12","date_gmt":"2017-01-20T11:48:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.doc.gold.ac.uk\/blog\/?p=2309"},"modified":"2017-01-20T11:48:12","modified_gmt":"2017-01-20T11:48:12","slug":"new-fabrication-spaces-open-at-goldsmiths-computing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.doc.gold.ac.uk\/blog\/?p=2309","title":{"rendered":"New fabrication spaces open at Goldsmiths Computing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2315\" src=\"http:\/\/www.doc.gold.ac.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/hack-space1.gif\" alt=\"hack-space\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Goldsmiths Computing has gained four new spaces this week, with the opening of two fabrication workshops, a specialist teaching room and a staff office.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Situated inside St James Hatcham Building (popularly known as \u2018the church\u2019), these new spaces comprise:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>G11: a specialist teaching room with suspended powerpoints and workbenches<\/li>\n<li>G12: the \u2018tidy\u2019 workshop with a dozen 3D printers and an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.epiloglaser.co.uk\/products\/fusion-laser-series.htm\">Epilog laser cutter<\/a><\/li>\n<li>G13: the \u2018messy\u2019 workshop for wood-working, drilling, sewing and carving, with a <a href=\"http:\/\/shopbottools.com\">ShopBot CNC mill<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These new spaces place Goldsmiths Computing in the forefront of creative computing, allowing students and staff to design and build physical objects that incorporate digital technology.<\/p>\n<p>The as-yet-unnamed facility builds on the concept of the maker space, hacker space or fablab; this is\u00a0a social space where students from across the department will meet, socialise and collaborate.\u00a0It\u00a0joins <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gold.ac.uk\/computing\/studywithus\/labs-and-facilities\/\">our suite of superb facilities<\/a> that include a motion capture lab, digital studios, games lab and computing labs.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1bS3adFjneI?rel=0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Goldsmiths Computing has gained four new spaces this week, with the opening of two fabrication workshops, a specialist teaching room and a staff office.
