The forms the viewer sees are reminiscent of those one might encounter in an alternative alien evolution.<\/p>\n<p>Bred and crossbred in software from multiple parents, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gold.ac.uk\/news\/the-art-of-william-latham\/\">Organic Art<\/a>\u2019s bizarre forms are created by a process of artistic evolution driven by human aesthetics.<\/p>\n<p>The aim of Organic Art VR is to give viewers a surreal and immersive experience in which they shape the world around them.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2188\" src=\"http:\/\/www.doc.gold.ac.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Organic-Art-3.jpg\" alt=\"organic-art-3\" width=\"900\" height=\"506\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.doc.gold.ac.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Organic-Art-3.jpg 900w, http:\/\/www.doc.gold.ac.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Organic-Art-3-300x169.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.doc.gold.ac.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Organic-Art-3-500x281.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Organic Art 2016 VR derives from the pioneering work of Latham and mathematician Stephen Todd in the late 1980s and is now fully immersive, enabled by HTC Vive VR headsets and high-resolution NEC video wall screens.<\/p>\n<p>Organic Art VR has been developed in the Goldsmiths Department of Computing by Professor Latham, visiting professor Stephen Todd and research fellow Lance Putnam under the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.digitalcreativity.ac.uk\">Digital Creativity Labs<\/a>\u00a0research project.<\/p>\n<p>The inaugural <a href=\"https:\/\/live.newscientist.com\">New Scientist Live<\/a> event, created by the team behind the world\u2019s best-known science magazine, is a four-day festival of ideas and discovery for all the family.\u00a0British astronaut Tim Peake will open the show and visitors will see the latest science and technology including the Bloodhound 1000mph rocket car, the world\u2019s leading robots and drones, Virtual Reality experiences, science workshops for all ages, more than 100 world-leading scientists, a robotic cocktail bar and plenty more.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/live.newscientist.com\">New Scientist Live<\/a> runs from 22-25 September at ExCel London<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gold.ac.uk\/computing\/staff\/w-latham\/\">About William Latham<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gold.ac.uk\/computing\/studywithus\/\">Study games design and programming<\/a>\u00a0at Goldsmiths<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><em>Adapted from a news release by Sarah Cox first published on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gold.ac.uk\/news\/organic-art-vr\/\">Goldsmiths News<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Visitors to this month\u2019s New Scientist Live event in London will be the first to experience Goldsmiths computer artist William Latham\u2019s organic art in virtual reality.
