{"id":1599,"date":"2015-05-05T10:33:51","date_gmt":"2015-05-05T10:33:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.doc.gold.ac.uk\/blog\/?p=1599"},"modified":"2015-05-07T12:08:17","modified_gmt":"2015-05-07T12:08:17","slug":"computational-arts-student-wins-saudi-innovation-entrepreneurship-prize","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.doc.gold.ac.uk\/blog\/?p=1599","title":{"rendered":"Computational Arts student wins Saudi innovation &#038; entrepreneurship prize"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1600\" src=\"http:\/\/www.doc.gold.ac.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/CAov5VrXIAEz806.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"392\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.doc.gold.ac.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/CAov5VrXIAEz806.jpg 600w, http:\/\/www.doc.gold.ac.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/CAov5VrXIAEz806-300x196.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>MA Computational Arts student Hadeel Ayoub has won an\u00a0<em>Innovation &amp; Entrepreneurship Prize for Saudi Students in the UK<\/em>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Her\u00a0prize-winning\u00a0project, the\u00a0Sign Language Glove,\u00a0uses flex sensors to &#8216;translate&#8217; the hand and\u00a0finger\u00a0positions used in sign language into alphabet characters on an LED display.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/signlanguagewitharduino.tumblr.com\">Sign Language Glove project blog<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As well as winning the \u00a31000\u00a0bronze medal prize, Hadeel\u00a0was approached to present her\u00a0innovation at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridgenetwork.co.uk\/events\/innovation-leaders-conference-2015-ilc-2015\/\">Innovation Leaders Conference at Cambridge Judge Business School<\/a> and\u00a0the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arabinnovation.net\">Arab Innovation Network Annual Conference<\/a> \u00a0in Jordan.<\/p>\n<p>She was also approached by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.evolvys.com\">Evolvys Venture Builders<\/a>,\u00a0a technology network that identifies innovations and helps to bring\u00a0them to the market. The CEO,\u00a0Dr. Evolves Oudrhiri (one of the competition judges) offered Hadeel some of their microchips to incorporate into the\u00a0next prototype of the sign language glove.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7J2M0GltG_I?rel=0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;I got the idea for\u00a0the sign language with arduino project while I was working on a photo editing software which allows the user to control image pixels and has the freedom to input letters as pixels.\u00a0<\/em><em>I thought to substitute the keyboard input with interactive sign language using flex sensors and an arduino.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;For\u00a0the flex sensors for the fingers I used an accelerometer to detect hand orientation. For aesthetic reasons, I replaced the microcontroller from arduino uno to the sewable lily pad so I could hide it within the glove fabric. I also got some conductive thread to patch things up without breaking the circuit.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Finally, instead of the serial monitor (and again for aesthetic purposes), I got an LED 4-digit-numerical display screen to display the letters.
